Belt size versus total length

Everyday "belt size" is the buckle-to-middle-hole measurement. Total length adds the extra strap beyond the buckle down to the very tip — the number that actually matters for tool belts, gun belts, and anything carrying real weight or gear.

standard: total length ≈ waist + 7″
heavy-duty: total length ≈ waist + 10″

Heavy-duty and tactical belts need more allowance since bulkier buckles and any gear worn underneath both eat into the usable strap length.

When total length matters

Who actually needs this number

Tool belts

Room for pouches and gear

Tool belts often sit over work clothes and need extra strap to fasten comfortably with equipment attached.

Gun belts

Holster and duty gear clearance

Duty and concealed-carry belts frequently need more length to accommodate a holster and any additional attachments.

Custom leatherwork

Ordering a made-to-measure strap

If you're having a belt custom-cut, total length — not standard belt size — is the number a leatherworker needs.

Everyday belts

For a standard dress or casual belt, the regular belt size calculator is the simpler, more common tool.

Belt length FAQs

Belt size refers to the buckle-to-middle-hole measurement used for everyday sizing. Total length includes the full strap, from buckle to the tip, which is longer.

Heavier buckles, holsters and pouches often need more strap to fasten comfortably around additional gear or a thicker duty belt underneath.

Roughly 4 to 6 inches beyond the buckle is typical for standard belts, though custom and tactical styles can vary.

For heavy-duty or tactical belts, many makers offer custom lengths — worth considering if your estimate falls between two stocked sizes.
