How to Measure for a Belt

Two ways to get an accurate belt size: measure a belt that already fits, or measure your waist directly and apply the standard allowance. Here's both, done properly.

Method one

Measuring a belt that already fits

If you have a belt you already wear comfortably, lay it flat and measure from the base of the buckle — where the strap attaches — to the hole you actually use, not the very end of the strap. That number is your true belt size, no conversion needed.

Method two

Measuring your waist directly

1

Find the right height

Wrap the tape at the height where a belt would actually sit — this varies with rise and personal preference.

2

Keep it snug, not tight

The tape should sit the way a belt would when worn comfortably, not pulled in or left loose.

3

Round to the nearest available size

Feed the number into the belt size calculator, or round manually to the nearest even inch or 5cm step.

Starting from pant size instead

The +2 inch shortcut

If you don't want to measure at all, your usual pant waist size plus roughly two inches gets you very close, since belt size is measured to the middle hole rather than the tip of the strap.

belt size = pant size + 2″, rounded to nearest even
belt size = direct waist measurement, rounded to nearest even

Measuring FAQs

Yes — if a belt already fits well on the hole you actually use, measuring from the buckle to that hole gives you your true belt size directly.

Measure at the height and thickness of clothing you'll typically wear the belt with, but avoid bulky outerwear that would add extra inches.

A soft fabric or vinyl tape measure works best; a piece of string measured afterward against a ruler is a reasonable substitute.

Snug, similar to how a belt would actually sit — not pulled tight, but not loose either.
